Play Make Write Think

Avatar

This is a picture of me sitting on a rock at the most beautiful beach I have ever been to, Cala d’Hort.

I am a travel fanatic. Those colours booming out of my head illustrate the endless thoughts that strike my head while I am on a trip. Travelling lets me stretch my mental horizon and see the world in micro detail with macro choice. Waves unfurling, and crashing against rocks as their final encore, never cease to amaze me. I chose this picture as my avatar because it represents the imagination I want to put across during the class. I hope to feel the same breeze of creativity while writing during the semester.

This image is clicked by my dad. I edited this badge through Sketchbook which is quite user friendly. Thus, it was a very smooth process.

I tried very hard to think of an avatar that would represent me. I thought of a couple of ideas, but I was not fully convinced about them. They didn’t feel like they were me.

So, partly out of frustration and partly out of amusement I decided to post an Instagram ‘close friend story’, asking those who know me best to describe me as a bunch of words or emoticons. This proved to be more insightful and helpful than I intentioned. The most common replies that came up were ‘sleepy’, ‘coffee’, and ‘lazy’. I also got ‘nerd’ a couple of times. I found this funny because these were contradicting each other: coffee is supposed to make you feel awake, not sleepy, and lazy and nerd have opposing implications too. I decided to combine these random aspects of my personality to create an avatar.

My avatar is a sloth (primarily known for slowness and overall laziness) who is cuddled into a blanket, drinking coffee– a visual that makes me smile just thinking about it. It is exactly what I do to relax in my free time. I added the spectacles to incorporate the ‘nerd’ part– a reputation I have falsely been awarded for studying too much. A small, possibly irrelevant detail that I really liked about this particular image is that the blanket looks exactly like the one I sleep with every night. I believe that this avatar truly represents me in my ‘natural habitat’.

Literacy Narrative

Science can be tough for every child growing up. We learn about these different topics and theories that seem to come from nowhere. This culmination of ideas are given to children to help them gain a more diverse sense of knowledge about the current world and how things and life function between one another. These different properties are a bore to most, but to some it is a new way to express ideas. The most common expression in the science/education community of these ideas is by having students research topics and ideas on their own and present them at a place we all know as the science fair.

For many, expressing their ideas and findings in a neat poster may be simple and come as second nature, but for second grade me it was cruel. I spent countless hours planning and researching ideas that might appeal to me, and when I found one. I decided that it would work and I carried out the experiment and recorded the results. Now for the tricky part which was spending the next couple of days typing out pages of reflection about my process and how I came to my final conclusion. Transcribing so many thoughts took a lot of time and energy out of me, but I had to keep going, regardless. From this I was able to build upon my mental endurance as a writer, in retrospect the longest I had written up until this point in my life was an elementary five paragraph hamburger style essay.

Honestly another point in my life that helped me finally reach where I am currently in my english career was writing my college application. I was not your normal student who did the 650 words of common app, but instead I applied through Questbridge (an organization that helps lower socioeconomic, high achieving students attend college.) Their application consisted of sx essays that all dealt with personal life issues and questions that allowed applicants to share their individual story, something I was not used to from my traditional writing courses in high school. This allowed me to develop personal matters that I didn’t know were such a big issue when defining myself. I had a sense of purpose in life, but not so much a reason for where my beginnings had come from. This hindrance blocked me for many years with writing personal narratives.

These two skills allowed me to become a stronger and more confident writer. My science fair project allowed me to develop a passion for scientific research and build up my writing skills. My college application although short in space allowed me to flourish my emotional side of writing. This expansion of skill that was gained from my getting in touch with emotions now feels stronger compared to the endurance that I learned at a young age. However, my emotions and ideas can not be expressed without having just one or another. Learning how to utilize both skill sets has allowed me to become a stronger writer by being able to express myself in a way that allows for full coverage in many forms of writing, not just lab reports.

Lose Yourself to the Californication

Lose Yourself to the Californication Accredited by Jason McMillan, Oct 5, 2014

The photo that has been utilized to represent my websites page is a custom image used by Jason McMillan (a YouTuber who produces music mash ups). In this specific song he chose to combine the songs Californication by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lose Yourself to Dance by Daft Punk. This song was represented by the following as it shows the combine helmets of the Daft Punk Robots with a fruitful color dawned on them to represent the happy and relaxed tones of Anthony, Flea, and Co.

The reason that I have chosen this image is simple. I am a child of two similarity represented lineages. My father although I know him, I can not say much about the rest of his family and past. He is representative of the helmets by not revealing anything. My mothers family is open and warm hence they represents the dazzling colors that come from the R.H.C. side of the cover. These two lineages/songs are pushed into one image. Even though I may not be that secretive or super bubbly, I am a bit of both, so in some sense this is the perfect representation of me as a photo.

Combophoto

Honestly this was an interesting side quest. I read through the assignment and the directions and immediately tried figuring out what I wanted to combine. I personally don’t see myself as the creative type but I somehow managed to piece two pictures almost seamlessly. Of course I’ll get better as time goes on. I couldn’t find two pictures that had the exact same color bear but it’ll do. If we were to look at this picture in a more creative and figurative sense I would say my picture conveys the difference between real and fake. The fake teddy bear looks automatically artificial, anyone can look at it and see that it’s fake. But the real bear has an insane amount of detail in the photo, especially in the fur because it’s real it’s authentic. No matter how much you try to make something fake look real it won’t be possible because there are certain characteristics that you simply can’t catch.

Literacy Narrative Reflection

I haven’t touched on that topic in a while. It was hard to do but it was relieving at the same time. There were a lot of repressed feeling and there still are some but everything always works out. After writing this out I realized how stubborn I am with my feelings. For the sake of pride I won’t let them out on certain occasions which I have to work on. I think the most interesting line from what I wrote was “I could only feel the black” because I feel as though so many people can relate to that.
