For this assignment, I mainly listed the four main parts of our class work that help us progress throughout the semester. It can be easily seen that each component contributes differently for our learning and writing. Side quest acts like a daily work, seemingly interesting and relaxing, but also intriguing for us to explore what attitude a gamer should keep; narratives help us to comprehensively reflect on our learning stage in term of game and writing structure. Podcast facilitates us from multiple aspects: teamwork, communication, analysis, and production. It is through these work that we could fully comprehend the concept and knowledge of game.

Twine Game Reflection

Making a new game was definitely a new process for everyone in our group. We were confused and had no idea at the very first. Approaching deadline, we started to dig deeper in the topic and focus more on the phase “social issue”. It was the breakthrough of our work and we started to brainstorm from there. Since we all watched different dramas from all over the world, we raised the idea that why not we adapted the idea from the Japanese TV drama “Unnatural” to design a game talking about school violence, knowing that school violence is becoming more and more common these years and the power of the internet cannot be ignored. With the consent of all group members, we started to write our original adapted plots. I mainly focused on writing the original adapted plots by rewatching the episode again so that the other team members could revise it into a game format. To make it more engaging, we made it different choices, so that players could be absorbed into the story in the game while playing it and reading some fun choices. The plots are revealed as a conversation format with some dark background musics. The final product took us a big amount of time and we gradually went very into this assignment; we divided each part of our introduction of presentation to our game properly before game. The product looks very good to all of us and we were satisfied about its reflection on the society.

Podcast Reflection – Super Odyssey in Quarantine

In this episode of the series, I serve as the team’s producer. The process of developing and producing our podcast is very straightforward but also challenging. I firstly picked up a game that should be familiar with many people. But this version of the game, Super Mario Odyssey, also has its distinction from the previous version that it sets improvements and builds more connections with the modern world. At first, when we were all still at the older version stage, we were hard to think about the main points we want to talk in our podcast. But once we were becoming more into the game and realizing the connections with the versions and thinking about the game as a series, we decided to analyze our podcast into three parts: something remaining, something new, the conclusion. My primary goals are to not only build connections between the new version of the game with the older ones, but also bring this week’s episode with our last two. We did this by highlighting our points, quarantine, probing, etc. Also, similar from the style of our last few episodes, I tried to remain our podcast as a casual talk to make it interesting and relaxing. And from those processes, I learned more that it is through play, real life, and creation, we are able to create more and more possibilities; the skills in broadcasting and video-editing are definitely new to me and will be useful in my future life.

Game Comparison Reflection

The thesis in my essay is that though in different games trauma could be expressed in different ways and emotions, love, hope, salvation is always revealed through the topic of trauma. When I first tried to write this essay in such format, I was very wired that I have never written an essay that is straightforward like this. However, writing the thesis statement at the end actually helps me to reflect the central idea the broader picture of my essay after finishing the most part of it. And I organized my essay by three parts: the first two-part comparison, and the final big picture; the first sentence of each paragraph is always a sort of summary and the middle sentence is usually a transition. Throughout the process of my writing, I dig deep in the games that I analyzed. I was amazed and surprised that though both games appear have few connections, but the whole emotional connections related to trauma is quite the same.

Visual Note Taking

This is a note from a recent lecture in my biology course. We were spending several lectures studying the concepts of meiosis and how it works within cells. I utilized Notability in Ipad to draw this note visually, and it did help me think back and forth to strengthen my understanding of the learning. First, though this topic was repeated more than once in class, I rarely had chance to draw it by hands; usually I would consider it too wasteful for time and just start to practice questions. However, this visual note taking utilizes a back order that enhances my memories in another way that I have never tried before; some detailed obstacles encountered, such as how should I split the chromosome when cells enter into anaphase, connect with the potential concepts that I am not mastered at. Also, the whole idea of this assignment brings me to think that when completing a task, no matter taking notes or doing a labor work, thinking outside box or searching for unique clues may lead to effective results. The creativity of this assignment associated with our class is therefore impressed in my mind.

Throw a Piece of Paper into a Bin

My throw was my corroboration with my baby cousin. The seemingly simple task took several turns for us to complete it. It required to communicate effectively, and I had fun and troubles during the process of working with a young child like my cousin. Thinking outside box to make this task playful also makes it more like a game. Overall, I enjoyed it, and it does not seem as simple as it appear on the first glance.

Liveblogging Gris

As the moment I opened this game, the initial impression it gave it me was just one word: beauty. Yes, the arts, the color, the design of the character are so delicate that make me think I was watching a movie rather than playing a video game. It brings me not just the mindset to plat a simple game, but to feel the complex and unknown emotions the girl in the game has.

As I began moving with Gris and jumped and moved forward, I was a little bit confused what was the goal of the play, since most games I experienced before had clear purposes and standpoints. However, there was nothing I could do other than moving forward. As I kept walking, the scene was filled with red blood gradually, feeling with a depressed atmosphere, echoing with the overall artistic sadness and depression. It also made me notice that the meaning of Gris’s name that it originates from Spanish, meaning gray, somewhat symbolizing painfulness and sorrow that she went through. A sense of empathy immediately rise from my inner heart; therefore, I substitute myself as Gris to experience the rest of the story.

Then I fell from high in clouds, falling into a large scale of desserts. The color around me was no longer red, green, blue, and yellow; instead, it was only grey and white. Everything was full of depression, anger, and denial. It might be an event that Gris can never forget in her entire life or a heart knot she could never compromise with herself.

But this game is not only about emotions and story, though. As I moved along, there were various settings, space, buildings, and even underwater space. One thing that is quite unique is that Gris has to turn to square to avoid the danger in the upcoming sand storm. Many challenging but engaging skills were gradually unlocking as the game went on. As a gamer, I had to utilize different knowledge in physics to solve a variety of puzzles.

Here is a very artistic and impressive picture from the beginning of the game, which leaves me a great view on the sounding, picturing, designing effects of the game:

Podcast Reflection

Producing a podcast is a brand-new experience for me in my entire life. At the beginning stage of preparing for this project, I had no idea how should I start this assignment. Even some simple questions raised in my mind, such as what does podcast should actually look like? what should we talk about in it, etc. Fortunately, I was not alone; I have two wonderful teammates who went through all the challenges together. Though the beginning is hard, we made outlines, appointment with professor, and individual discussions to perfect the project.

The part I enjoyed most was the brainstorming we went through altogether. Among Us is a game that has unique features, containing meanings and brings popularities especially under such a pandemic time. Digging deep with several minds together, we combined “unity” “togetherness” “identity” and even disclose the truth about human nature relating to the literature we discussed in the lecture.
