Play Make Write Think

GONE HOME

After I heard the voice message, my initial thought was that they were not very rich as she had to take a very late flight, which was the cheapest. But as soon as I entered the door, I saw this huge mansion and I was confused as to what was going on. Why would someone who can afford to live in this mansion have to think about taking a cheap flight. The lighting from the starting was very dark. Initially because of the setting like darkness, thundering and suspense music, made me think it was a mystery game. The note Sam left reassured that, as I would have to find clues as to where she could have gone. I think another thing that was strange that I thought that there was going to be at least her mom or dad as she had come from this long trip. This also establishes Kaitlin’s character, she is a kind person as she didn’t want her mother to worry about picking her up, and her mother and father thought that she was responsible enough to take care of herself, so they might have gone to look for Sam without leaving a note.

I think scene was the most interesting for me was this place. It added to the suspense of the game as we find out that Oscar the person to whom this place belonged to her fathers uncle. I think this place establishes that there was a person who used to live her and went mad. This added to “horror” of the game. Involved in conspiracy theories and all, drove him to kill himself. Moreover, this establishes that Sam was bullied as she was often referred to the person who lived in the “psycho house”.

Liveblog Gone Home

The sound of the rain, foot steps, and thunder strikes really makes the game feel like a horror movie. I was standing in front of the door when the game started. Without any clear instructions I assumed getting into the house was the goal.

I found out the note on the door that Sam left for Katie. I had made no progress in this game so far. Thirty minutes later, I was still standing in front of the door. Since the door was locked, I started looking for a key that enabled me to go inside to find out more about Sam and his note.

I finally found the key underneath the duck. It was really dark inside the room.

I really felt myself involved in the game. Got impressed by the realistic this game is, especially the audio quality, I got scared every time I heard the thunder strike.

I noticed that I could turn on the lights. Found a creepy family portrait hanging on the wall. There were lots of notes from drawer. I looked around the house, walked through every room to find anything important that can be picked up. I found Sam’s room on the second floor, however it was locked again.

Brain Pollution

This photo was a combination between the Factory from the cover of Pink Floyd’s Animals with brains overlayed atop. This aimed to stay true to the theme of the songs of my favorite Pink Floyd album, talking about the perils of a materialistic society, and the dangers of always playing a cog in the capitalist machine. I sort of moved away from that message, favoring the rather pollution of our minds from all of the excess made accessible to us. The factory’s name is “CONSUME” to hammer down my opinion that the internet and mass media is causing “pollution” in our thoughts.

Flight

My combo photo was made of an image of a dolphin jumping out from the ocean and an egret flying. I chose the photos because I have always imagined as a child that fish and dolphins that jump out of the ocean seemed like they want to fly and reach the sky.

While this photo is edited well enough for minds the register and probably sufficient for an english assignment, there are many details that are still left untouched and can be further worked on. The shadow and lighting of the subjects and the background isn’t quit matching, there is barely any blend at the point where the dolphin image touches the egret, the ocean wave pattern seems unnatural and is clearly edited…

To me this image conveys the idea of freedom. The dolphin jumping through the surface of the ocean transforms into an egret that is able to sour through the skies, just as it may have wished when making the jump.

Marty the zebra

I had recently watched Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, a DreamWorks classic if you were born around 2000. I gained inspiration for this side quest from my favorite character in the movie, Marty the zebra. Marty gained my interest in the movie because unlike the hundreds of zebras in the movie that are white with black stripes, Marty is the only one that is black with white stripes. This distinct feature of Marty that allowed his friend, Alex the lion, to find Marty in a massive herd, which allowed them to resolve their movie-long contentious conflict regarding identity and individuality. Also, he’s voiced by Chris Rock.

Sly Jim: Avatar

I chose the glorious meme photo of Jim Halpert from the The Office because I think the picture encapsulates my personality. Jim sneakily watching from behind an office curtain is analogous to my introverted personality, as I am typically behind-the-scenes in social settings. I would say my introverted side, much more frequent than my extroverted half, is characterized by my tendencies to remain in the back of any place where there is unfamiliarity. If I am stuck in a setting of people I don’t know, I am usually the one checking his phone for the 5th in the same minute to see if I received a notification because I am dreadfully waiting… waiting….waiting…. to get sucked into a conversation that has been initiated by another person. Although my introverted self is common, I am strangely the most extroverted within my friends’ group when I am surrounded by the people I know. I like to mess with my friends, sometimes a little too much. I am not afraid to steer the conversation or sing out loud in the presence of my friends just to bring out a laugh. In this way, my behavior is also just like Jim’s mischievous grin.

Literacy Narrative Reflection

The idea of my literacy narrative came from an experience I had back in the middle of middle school. My narrative is about how a singular moment allowed me to have a greater appreciation for books. It was the time I was reading Agatha Christie’s novel And Then There Were None when I got spooked by one part of the book, and I dashed to my mom because I got the creeps, but my eyes were still uncontrollably locked onto the engaging narrative of the novel. I gained a greater appreciation for book following that moment because I was never so engaged in a book. The process of writing my literary narrative was challenging. Although it was fun to go back and remember memories of reading/writing, it was difficult to physically write my literary narrative, as I faced the same issue I always face when I write: I didn’t know how to start. It was only after 1 hour or so that I just started writing and hoped for the best. While I was struggling to write, I was just thinking to myself in regret that I should have actually read during those library trips because I would have developed a well-grounded foundation of reading if I actually read more since reading can help in one’s writing skills. Nonetheless, it was quite enjoyable to write my essay.  My favorite sentence from my essay is “The best I could do was The Conjuring because my friends forced me to; I ended up hiding behind my guardian pillow literally for every single second of the film that wasn’t occurring in broad daylight” because I still to this struggle to watch anything in a digital form of entertainment that is even remotely horror.

Keyboard + Crosswalk

I was in my studio when I read the prompt of this side quest. The first thing I saw was my keyboard piano. I thought that that the pattern of the keyboard is very much similar to the pattern of a crosswalk. I found a high-definition photo of a city crosswalk as the main background. Then I had to do some editing for the picture of a Juno Keyboard that I found online. The Keyboard had too much other buttons and features that would not fit in the overall image, which is why I cropped most of the keyboard, only leaving the black-and-white keyboard pattern. I thought the concept of music and street noises is interesting, so my main goal was to connect the two images into one to, making it seem like the pedestrians are coming out of the keys and going over the crosswalk. Therefore, I made the cropped image of the keyboard semi-transparent (around 60%) and merged it with the crosswalk and the pedestrians on the right side of the road.

The Influence of Americanism

The Influence of americanism

The world is an ever-changing place due to the rapid lifestyle that is widely prevalent. Trends and technology are constantly shoved in the face of people every hour of every day, primarily American based. Influences worldwide persuade us to visit a website, purchase the new thing, or any other way to get their product to cross your mind. I decided to combine the Eiffel tower and McDonald’s’ golden arches because of globalization affecting cultures; this particular photo combination was quite amusing to think about because I believe the idea of putting Mcdonalds branding on grande structures, such as the Eiffel tower, have come across the minds of their advertising heads. I knew I wanted to create a combophoto on globalization, but deciding how to convey my image was rather tricky. McDonald’s was on my mind, so I knew I wanted to include it, and I decided upon the Eiffel tower because the build allowed me to fit a street sign of everyone’s “favorite” restaurant on top; thus, my photocombo created, trying to convey the influence of American globalization on individual culture was produced.

Plant Cake

I was choosing image at very first to look for something living and vivid. The word “plant” appeared in my mind and then I searched for that and found an ideal one that I used for my final picture. Looking at the material, I found the soil part takes a big portion of the picture and consists an important amount of the supporting system of the living life. Such a wonderful section should be compared with something that are welcomed by people in their daily life. Based on the shape and the function, I immediately thought about cake, which are the daily desert that are attractive for many households. Founding a coconut cake picture online, I tried to cut out the picture and blend the cake with the soil perfectly. This step is a little challenging since my photo-editing skill is not proficient enough. Overall, I want to share that living life, especially those supporting systems that work hard always, are as sweet as those we value highly.
