Play Make Write Think

Podcast Reflection

This is my first time to produce a podcast. At first, we really had no idea how to do anything, and trouble making any progress. Waiting until the weekend before the deadline, we finally made a decision on the game that we planned to make the episode on. The game KIDS is a minimalist style game or interactive animation that all of us think it is interesting and would have lots to talk about. After deciding the game, we brought ideas of what each of us wanted to cover in the episode, and organized them into a google doc. We spent about 3 hours writing the script together, and that was really productive. When it came to recording, we decided to record all separately. Roy edited the audio, Ryan wrote the paragraph description, and I did the thumbnail image, afterward.

Through this assignment, I gained a familiarity with podcasting. I’m proud and pleased with how the episode turned out in the end. My group mates, Roy and Ryan, are both really talented and I really enjoyed the time working with them.

What’s In My Bag

Notebooks: to take notes

Pencil case: for write down

Cough drops: love the taste

Laptop: need it for doing assignments

AirPods: love music, a must-have for me

Sunscreen: always forget putting on sunscreen before going outside, so I put one in my bag

Lipsticks: to make me look less pale

This is the bag that I usually use when I go to the library. Therefore, I do not agree that these items inside my bag could fully represent myself or my personality since I carry these things mainly because I need to use them in the library.

It was not hard for me to take this picture. I started with taking out everything that was inside the bag. Then, I put these on the floor and grouped items together based on categories. For me, this should be considered as writing since there was truly a message that I wanted to share in these paragraphs.

Liveblog Gone Home

The sound of the rain, foot steps, and thunder strikes really makes the game feel like a horror movie. I was standing in front of the door when the game started. Without any clear instructions I assumed getting into the house was the goal.

I found out the note on the door that Sam left for Katie. I had made no progress in this game so far. Thirty minutes later, I was still standing in front of the door. Since the door was locked, I started looking for a key that enabled me to go inside to find out more about Sam and his note.

I finally found the key underneath the duck. It was really dark inside the room.

I really felt myself involved in the game. Got impressed by the realistic this game is, especially the audio quality, I got scared every time I heard the thunder strike.

I noticed that I could turn on the lights. Found a creepy family portrait hanging on the wall. There were lots of notes from drawer. I looked around the house, walked through every room to find anything important that can be picked up. I found Sam’s room on the second floor, however it was locked again.

Combophoto

I combined the pictures of a window with a sunset beach scene. The picture of the window is taken by me several days ago. I found this sunset picture from the app, PicsArt. Using the app, I cropped the picture of the sunset into six pieces, resized them, and fitted into the windows. Living by the sea is always my dream. In the original picture, there was just a tree behind the window. After the combination, the window got a charming scene behind it. At first, I have trouble deciding the pictures to combine, spending time looking for pictures on google and many other places. Then, I found this window picture in my phone, and had the idea to change the scene behind the window.

Narrative Reflection

Link to the Narrative

The pre-writing exercise really helped me while constructing ideas together. Following the steps on the pre-writing, I found that writing could be easy. These steps saved lots of time for me while writing the essay too. I did not feel strange about doing the pre-writing exercise first. Back to high school, my English teachers always suggested the class to do the pre-write first as well as you.

Before heading to the pre-write exercise, I read the prompt first. While reading the prompt, “the key experiences that shaped the way you read and write”, I have already had an idea. “Writing was one of my biggest fears.” This sentence perfectly summarizes my history reaction to writing. With a conversation between me and a little boy, I want to start my essay in an amusing and compelling way. By the end of writing this narrative, I surprisingly found that I was not taking that much of time, realizing writing was not my biggest fear anymore.

For me, the most interesting sentence from my essay would be, “There is no right or wrong.” This sentence means a lot to me; in order to show that, it has repeated three times in the essay. It was the turning point for me to realize that there was nothing I should be afraid of. Confidence is the key, with the confident mindset and eliminating my dependence on erasers, writing has no correct answer.

I chose the image of English book as the background. Thinking about the main topic of ENG101, English literature should definitely be the key. Recently, I went to Qingdao, which is a costal city in western China. This picture was taken by me while visiting Qingdao. I love the sea, enjoy spending time sitting there and listening to the splash of sea waves crashing against the rocks. I have lived in San Diego for four years. Visiting Qingdao reminds me the sea that I used to see in San Diego everyday when going to school. Video games should be another key element of this course, I also included the images of controller handles. A little fun fact about myself is that I named myself Wendy after watching the Disney movie Peter Pan. Therefore, I included the image of Wendy from Peter Pan as well.

Literacy Narrative

“Is that weird that I start my essay with a conversation,” a boy waved for my attention and asked. I hurried over, with a smile on my face, and replied, “There is no right or wrong in writing.”

The query and the anxiety etched on his face reminded me of my younger self in the writing class. Writing was one of my biggest fears. Fear of doing something wrong had once imprisoned my thoughts. One lesson, the teacher assigned a timed essay. Time marches on, there were only a few words and repeated phrases on the paper. Eraser shavings were all over my jeans. As the teacher walked across the classroom, I covered the paper with my hands hurriedly. Full of trepidation that my efforts would make me the subject of ridicule, I gripped the eraser and rubbed out the lines on the sheet again.

Then suddenly, the eraser slipped from my fingers to the floor before I could retrieve it, the teacher snatched it from reach, and made her way to the front of the class. “From now on, no one needs an eraser,” she announced. “There is no right or wrong in writing.”

My eraser had been my crutches, a way to guide me towards errorless. However, the teacher’s words were the turning point for me to realize that writing was not to be approached like solving a math problem, only one correct answer. So-called “mistakes” were the path towards exploration and self-expression. I resolved to continue without an eraser and proceed without consideration of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’.

Devoting full concentration, I wrote according to my inner feelings and personal insights. For an hour, my writing covered the whole page, hundreds of thoughts flowed from my pencil to the papar. As inspiration blossomed, I was so self-engrossed in the task that I was unaware the class had ended. Without noticing, my dependence on erasers gradually diminished.

Twelve years later, I signed up to be a writing class teaching assistant, and got the chance to look at versions of my younger self. Sitting in the corners, bundles of frustration, staring into near blank paper, pencil in one hand and an eraser in the other, they were all reluctant to let others see their writing, blind to their own capabilities. As I walked around the classroom, I understood both the journey I have been on and that my pupils were in the early stages of. Every class, the students were asking the questions that I used to ask, expressing the fears that I used to feel. They wanted to know how to correct what they evaluated as “errors” and were all despondent over “mistakes”. Like what my writing teacher has suggested for me, I encourage them to put down their erasers, at the same time, throw away their insecurities. ”There is no right or wrong in writing.” I said.

With a confident mindset we can grow creativity, rather than seeking to wipe away the unwanted. Similarly, we don’t possess “erasers” in life, learning from our mistakes and never repeating the same mistake is the way I turn them into valuable treasures.
