Brain Pollution

This photo was a combination between the Factory from the cover of Pink Floyd’s Animals with brains overlayed atop. This aimed to stay true to the theme of the songs of my favorite Pink Floyd album, talking about the perils of a materialistic society, and the dangers of always playing a cog in the capitalist machine. I sort of moved away from that message, favoring the rather pollution of our minds from all of the excess made accessible to us. The factory’s name is “CONSUME” to hammer down my opinion that the internet and mass media is causing “pollution” in our thoughts.

A Nostalgic Reflection on My Past

This narrative exercise really made me look back and see just how much the Ranjan of the present was shaped by the reading and freedom of Ranjan as a child. As embarrassing as it is, I truly believe Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants series had a profound effect on my writing. Going back and reading some of my earliest writing, I cringe at the jokes I inserted and the characters I made, but I hope one day when I am even more experienced, I can look back on this post and lovingly cringe at my progression. Reminiscing back on my roots really rejuvenated my passion for reading, as well, which waned as technology and quick internet content grew more enticing. It really is fascinating that so much could be based off such little substance, and I hope to base the foundation for having strong academic writing skills off the things I read and do in this class and Emory as a whole!

Avatar

For my avatar, I wanted to pick a grand picture that aimed to symbolize my expectations for college and my outlook on my future.

I picked an illustration from Paradiso in which Dante is graced by the Angels and sees the divine light at the center of it all. My name is placed brightly in the middle, contrasting with the bright gold of its surroundings. It was originally a black and white illustration but I played with the color balances and contrast to make the picture “pop” as it does.

Now, I in no way equate myself to any Divine beings, or the bliss of paradise – this is all metaphor for me being the master of my own destiny. In college I want to find my path to success, even as my definition of it changes, so in a way putting my name inside the circle of angels signifies the end goal of success as well!
