Assemblies

For this assignment, I mainly listed the four main parts of our class work that help us progress throughout the semester. It can be easily seen that each component contributes differently for our learning and writing. Side quest acts like a daily work, seemingly interesting and relaxing, but also intriguing for us to explore what attitude a gamer should keep; narratives help us to comprehensively reflect on our learning stage in term of game and writing structure. Podcast facilitates us from multiple aspects: teamwork, communication, analysis, and production. It is through these work that we could fully comprehend the concept and knowledge of game.

Visual Note Taking

This is a note from a recent lecture in my biology course. We were spending several lectures studying the concepts of meiosis and how it works within cells. I utilized Notability in Ipad to draw this note visually, and it did help me think back and forth to strengthen my understanding of the learning. First, though this topic was repeated more than once in class, I rarely had chance to draw it by hands; usually I would consider it too wasteful for time and just start to practice questions. However, this visual note taking utilizes a back order that enhances my memories in another way that I have never tried before; some detailed obstacles encountered, such as how should I split the chromosome when cells enter into anaphase, connect with the potential concepts that I am not mastered at. Also, the whole idea of this assignment brings me to think that when completing a task, no matter taking notes or doing a labor work, thinking outside box or searching for unique clues may lead to effective results. The creativity of this assignment associated with our class is therefore impressed in my mind.

Throw a Piece of Paper into a Bin

My throw was my corroboration with my baby cousin. The seemingly simple task took several turns for us to complete it. It required to communicate effectively, and I had fun and troubles during the process of working with a young child like my cousin. Thinking outside box to make this task playful also makes it more like a game. Overall, I enjoyed it, and it does not seem as simple as it appear on the first glance.

Liveblogging Gris

As the moment I opened this game, the initial impression it gave it me was just one word: beauty. Yes, the arts, the color, the design of the character are so delicate that make me think I was watching a movie rather than playing a video game. It brings me not just the mindset to plat a simple game, but to feel the complex and unknown emotions the girl in the game has.

As I began moving with Gris and jumped and moved forward, I was a little bit confused what was the goal of the play, since most games I experienced before had clear purposes and standpoints. However, there was nothing I could do other than moving forward. As I kept walking, the scene was filled with red blood gradually, feeling with a depressed atmosphere, echoing with the overall artistic sadness and depression. It also made me notice that the meaning of Gris’s name that it originates from Spanish, meaning gray, somewhat symbolizing painfulness and sorrow that she went through. A sense of empathy immediately rise from my inner heart; therefore, I substitute myself as Gris to experience the rest of the story.

Then I fell from high in clouds, falling into a large scale of desserts. The color around me was no longer red, green, blue, and yellow; instead, it was only grey and white. Everything was full of depression, anger, and denial. It might be an event that Gris can never forget in her entire life or a heart knot she could never compromise with herself.

But this game is not only about emotions and story, though. As I moved along, there were various settings, space, buildings, and even underwater space. One thing that is quite unique is that Gris has to turn to square to avoid the danger in the upcoming sand storm. Many challenging but engaging skills were gradually unlocking as the game went on. As a gamer, I had to utilize different knowledge in physics to solve a variety of puzzles.

Here is a very artistic and impressive picture from the beginning of the game, which leaves me a great view on the sounding, picturing, designing effects of the game:

Sunday Sketch – Idrawing 2020

Looking at the limited materials available around me, I was uncertain what I should do for the Sunday sketch assignment, since all I have these days for completing homework are my technological tools. It might be even hard to believe for others that I could not find a piece of paper in my room since I am used to tablet for my college career. I soon realize that the world has stepped into a digital era that has completely changed every individual’s life dramatically. Not having traditional drawing materials is not the issue. Therefore, I utilize the features around me, creating a three-dimensional drawing that I have never tried before.

An item that could be easily found nearby me is a mouse that is used to be plugged into a laptop. Utilizing this item and combining it to the technological feature that I thought before, I then created an image that shows the future drawing machine that is based on technology rather than traditional painting to echo the world we are living in. Mimicking the appearance of a traditional mouse of today but has more advanced features and colors, the future drawing machine showing on the right side gives enough space for people to create and imagine something that does not happen today. Drawing could also become digital and completely advanced in the future world with the aid of technological tools.

What’s In Your Bag?

items in my bag:

  1. Laptop: I used my mac all the time to do homework and editing for different documents and excels. It is also used frequently for me to send emails. As a college student studying online, laptop is indispensable for me especially in terms of academics.
  1. Phone: a device that is with me all the time no matter what size of my bag is. I not only use it for some basic applications like camera, phone call, but also use it as my social tool to pay by apps, listen to music, and text friends.
  2. Mask: obviously need it at this time since covid is still here. Many public places in China require people to wear masks to get the permission to get in.
  3. iPad: I used my iPad with apple pencil in college every day. I used to be a person stick with hardcopy. However, after college started, I noticed that it is hard to keep notes on separate notebooks for all the subjects I learn. It is much more convenient for me to record down in a single tablet and review whenever I need. The iPad is also used for me watch videos and dramas for entertainment.
  4. AirPods: I used it to listen to audio, music in the public space. The design of AirPods really makes my life simple and convenient.
  5. Calculator: some of my courses, such as chemistry, require complex calculations and Ti 84 really becomes my tool when calculating. Laptop, iPad, calculator, and sometimes AirPods have become the only things I need for study.
  6. ID card: I keep my ID card all the time with me so that I would be sure it is placed safely and I can take it out whenever I need it in the society.
  7. Key: having my key with me makes me easy to enter my house even sometimes my parents are not at home.
  8. Umbrella: it is with me all the time through summer to protect me from sunburn. Self care is another topic of my life that I pay attention on.

I like this interesting side quest since it made me start to look at myself from an angle that I have not paid attention on before. Though many people may say this small part of life cannot represent one’s life entirely, it gives people a different perspective to reflect on which type of people they are; some details usually can tell something objective about an individual surprisingly. This image is actually easy to make since I basically only grab these stuff when going out. My life is regular like many other peers; I am into technology and also keep organized and relatively simple . Writing in catalog is a special type of writing, because we are complex enough that cannot only be represented by certain items, but through an objective view, we are actually describing ourselves to readers; this exploration makes writing not limited and boring but more interesting.

Player Narrative Reflection Post

player narrative: https://thisiselainecom.wordpress.com/player-narrative/
I started my player narrative first by reflecting upon my literary narrative. I thought that the most thing I could improve was the flow of details in the essay that could make the essay vivid. Getting the idea for an essay is quite important, so I had been brainstorming my experience as a player for a long time. I realized that games are not limited into digital form that I spent most of my leisure time with in childhood, but it also means any quest that I experienced, as long as I kept a “playful” attitude. Then my experience shifted to the recent, when Professor Morgen asked us to play several unique games with meaningful topic and delicate design. I found that the games I enjoyed in class echoed with one of my interests – escape room, which I had lots of memories with.

The main idea of my essay is that good games, like escape room, not only bring us to solve puzzles, but also lead us to experience a variety of emotions; reaching the end of a game successfully is not the purpose; enjoying the process of exploration and appreciating the artistic effects the game designed with are more enjoyable. To express my theme, I chose to first introduce my first opinion on escape room, and elaborate what I experienced in an advanced game to highlight the surprise and gain from it. Finally, I applied the mindset of a player into real life that if we can be “playful”, putting less concerns and more courage in the matter we are dealing with, our life might be filled with exploration and excitement.

Writing this player narrative makes me dig deeper into the experience I had in my life and try to reconstruct a concrete story into an exposition based on vivid memories. With the big amount of details contained in the actual game, I also learned to utilize the information and put them together to make the essay clear and simple.

Liveblogging for Gone Home

Here I am to begin the exploration in the game, gone home. Coming first to a player’s mind is a story line that illustrates the daughter, Katie, in a family was traveling back from Europe at the airport and calling her mom. The opening of the story gives little clue but leaves enough space for players to imagine what would happen afterwards. Then, a few minutes later, the screen switched from the airport scene to a house, leaving a dark room for player to freely explore. I firstly noticed that at a rainy night, the house without any people present looked fairly scary and mysterious. The weird atmosphere made me wonder where are the other family members. Turning around and searching for more clues, I noticed that there was a note left by Sam on the door and the door was locked. I read through the note, learning that Sam intended to make me not worried under the current situation. Then I moved around and found that there was a key hidden inside a drawer under an item. That moment marked my excitement and progression for the storyline.

Then I utilized the key and opened the door, coming to another room with access of different rooms. I looked at all the available items left in the house, and gradually explored the layout of the house. There was a sound coming from Sam at some moments and recalling her experience. The depressing music accompanying with the game as it went on intensifies the mysterious effect the designer wanted to display. With all the clues I discovered by myself, I was afraid that the sequence of the story I randomly followed would disrupt my understanding of the entire story. However, it is one of the most interesting features of this game. It gives players enough space to explore freely, no matter what sequence they follow. It is similar to finding out the missing pieces of a puzzle and putting them together gradually to look at the whole picture. The design and freedom the game contains are definitely the highlights for this product.

As I went on the story and unlocked different rooms inside the house, I eventually learned that the sister of Katie, was falling in love with her classmate, Lonnie, and her life was changed dramatically. As for their mom, whose husband was trapped in his depression, she met a nice ranger, Rick, who showed interest in her. Meanwhile, their dad and mom had a talk afterwards and wanted to give their marriage another try by joining a camp. All the mysteries were gradually revealed. The story line is interesting and full of surprise.

This product gives me a totally new angle to look at games in general. A good game is never only produced for entertainment, but also for space learning, detection, and any other sorts of challenges. A game, such as Gone Home, could be filled with emotions and lives if it is well designed. Good game is definitely also a form of literature that is worth appreciating.

Addition:

This is one of the scenes in the game. It is worth mentioning that all the details in the game, including visual and auditory effects, all intensify the main scary theme of the story. The details in the game is pretty delicate and worth appreciating.
